Music, Sound & Soundscapes on Penikese Island

What did we hear on Penikese Island and how did we express our experience through sound?

Our experiences at Penikese prompted a number of creative responses and reflections in the sonic realm. The following section is composed of field recordings and a soundscape composition. We hope this work provides unique auditory insights into our experience on the island.

Sounds & Soundscapes

Soundscape composition at Penikese was created by Emerson Jenisch and Brooks Olson that presents recorded sounds heard on Penikese Island. Utilizing a hydrophone (underwater microphone), we considered the following questions: How do we hear the land? How does the land hear us? Emerson and Brooks began with the sound of the ocean, rooting the piece in this element, symbolizing the ocean’s significance for the island. These water recordings expanded to bugs, voices, and other sounds of the environments. The composition reflects sound’s importance in the identity of a place.
